Jovanotti is about to turn sixty and is travelling across Italy with a new summer tour. But what stands out this time is, above all, the way he speaks about the passing of time.
The boy in the cap.
The DJ.
The singer-songwriter.
The traveller.
The performer in front of thousands of people.
Jovanotti has been many things.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, as he approaches sixty, he says:
| “At sixty, you carry within you the multitude of all you have been.” |
His words are the starting point, but the idea applies to all of us.
As the years pass, we become who we are without entirely ceasing to be who we once were.
The person we are today still contains the person we were twenty years ago.
We have not remained unchanged. We have changed our minds, lived through experiences, let some things go and learned to recognise others.
And yet, something remains.
A spark of enthusiasm.
A way of looking at the world.
A desire set aside.
A part of ourselves we thought we had outgrown, which sometimes makes itself felt again.
Sometimes, a song is all it takes to find it again.
At other times, it is a place, an encounter, a photograph. Or a new choice that surprises us by bringing back to light something that was already within us.
Time does not erase our earlier identities. It transforms them, combines them and carries them into the present.
We are not the fixed sum of all the people we have been
We are their evolution.
There is also something new in the way we reach sixty today.
We see more and more people who still have much to do, to say and to discover. People who begin new projects, change direction, build relationships, travel, learn and continue to imagine the future.
Jovanotti is a well-known example.
Alongside him are countless people whose names we may never know, living lives that are every bit as rich and interesting. Without a stage or an audience, but with the same energy to step forward again and shape a new season of their lives.
It is one of the most interesting aspects of this new adulthood: not to regard what we have lived through as an endpoint, but as the foundation from which to continue.
Everything we have been has brought us here. But the multitude we carry within us does not belong only to the past.
It continues to grow.
What we choose today, the way we look at the world, the curiosity we preserve, the people we meet and the experiences we are still willing to embrace are shaping the person we will be tomorrow.
The future begins with everything we have become and with our willingness never to consider ourselves complete.
It means continuing to become.
